Read this if you try to use BlueWhaleMail on Sony Ericsson K800i (or similar) phone and it reports that there was a problem with your APN or a problem making a connection to the internet.

In order to be able to use the application, you need to check that your internet settings are set correctly. To do this you need:

1. An APN ('Access Point Name') set up for your Network Operator to allow GPRS access.
2. Point the BlueWhaleMail application to use this APN by creating a 'Profile' in the phone's Java settings that uses this APN.

Adding APN settings

Your phone might already have GPRS connectivity setup, but if it doesn't you can easily add it.

1. From the main menu go to "Settings" and scroll to the last tab "Connectivity"

2. Select "Data Communications" -> "Data Accounts"

3. On this screen you have the list of all data account settings on your phone. Look for your mobile network operator provider. The name usually will consists from the name of your carrier name + GPRS and/or INTERNET, such as "T-Mobile Internet" "Orange GPRS Internet", "O2 PAYG GPRS Internet"

If you don't have an account, you can create one by selecting "New Account" at the top of the list. Select PS data next

4. On the next screen, enter new data settings. If you don't know what information you should enter, please see the forum: What settings do I need for my network operator?

Configuring BlueWhaleMail application to use correct APN settings

1. Go to "Settings", scroll to the last tab - "Connectivity"

2. Select "Internet Setting" -> "Settings for Java"

3. Select New Profile at the top of the list.

4. Enter a name that would be easy for you to identify as the correct APN settings for your mobile operator.

5. Select Connect Using and press Select.

6. Select the desired data account. This would be the data account you added in the section above.

6. Select Save.

7. You will see New Profile Created message on your phone.

8. Select the profile you just created bys crolling to it with the thumbstcik and pressing "Select" - it should be marked by a small dot once you've done this.

Your phone should now be configured and able to use the BlueWhaleMail software.

Hello,

I'm trying to use K800i to access BlueWhaleMail.

My question is, will I still be able to use it to connect if I'm using a dial-up WAP connection instead of an access-point GPRS?

My tarriff is really old and it only allows me to access the internet from my phone using the dial-up method.

Otherwise, I've got another phone and number to try using GPRS...

Thanks,
Fiona

Theoretically, if it will let you connect to the internet it ought to work. For example, with WiFi equipped phones like the Nokia E61, we sometimes use an 802.11 (WiFi) access point instead of GPRS and it works fine for us.

Can you give it a try and let us know how it works?

It fails the "connection check" at which point I'm already connected...the error message is that BlueWhaleMail can't connect to the Internet.

It asks me to try again with a different "access point".

How/where do I choose my "access point"? I want to make sure it's connecting via my dial-up WAP (or whatever the correct term for it is...).

Thanks...

Hi I did actually reply a few days ago but not sure if my reply has been lost?

I can't connect to the internet using BlueWhaleMail even though I can normally connect for browsing.

I'll try again using another phone and see if that'd work...

Hi Fiona,

I've just had to fix this on a K800i form someone on an O2 contract so I think we now understand the problem. I've updated the instructions above to give better guidance, but here's a outline of the situation and the fix. Sorry for the long answer, but I wanted to try and give you (and other readers) as much useful information as possible.

Step 1 - check the profile use for Internet browsing To first understand what settings your phone uses when it successfully connects to the Internet, go to "Menu", "Settings", "Connectivity" tab, "Internet settings", "Internet profiles". There you will see a list of the "Internet profiles" available on your phone. Importantly, you will see that one of these profiles is marked as selected with a little dot to its left. This is the profile used when you you are browsing the Internet from your phone. This may be called something like "dial-up connection" from what you describe, but sometimes settings on phones aren't that clear. Make a note of which profile is selected, as we'll use that in the next step.

Step 2 - ensure that BlueWhaleMail uses the profile used for Internet browsing The next step is to try using that profile for the BlueWhaleMail application. If you're still in the "Inetrnet profiles" menu on your phone, use the 'Back' button to return to the "Inetrnet settings" menu and select "Settings for Java". (Otherwise, from the phone's standby screen, go to "Menu", "Settings", "Connectivity" tab, "Internet settings", "Settings for Java". Here again you will see a list of Internet profiles. If the profile you noted in step 1 is not selected, then use the phone's thumbstick to scroll to that profile and press "Select". You should then try the BlueWhaleMail application again. If the profile you noted in step 1 is already selected, or you've retried the BlueWhaleMail application but it still doesn't work, then it indicates a problem with the APN used by the profile - see step 3 below.

Step 3 - WAP and Internet APNs When it comes to Internet browsing there seem to be two types of APN that can work. The problem is that only one of these two APNs seems to work for applications that aren't Internet browsers. WAP APNs allow your phone to reach the Internet but have constraints on them. Internet APNs also allow your phone to reach the Internet but without the additional constraints. If you've carried out step 2 but BlueWhaleMail still doesn't work it probably means that the Internet profile you selected in "Settings for Java" uses a WAP APN. So, I'd suggest checking you have an Internet APN, then create a profile that uses the new Internet APN, and finally select that as the profile in "Settings for Java" - the easiest way to do this probably to follow the updated instructions above. They include a link to find eth APNs settinsg for your operator.

Again, sorry it's such a long answer, but hopefully gives you the detail you need. Please let me know how you get on.

Best wishes,
Richard

Hi Richard,

thanks for your help.

I've followed the 3 steps you posted and I'm stuck on the last step. I believe my APN must be a WAP APN instead of an Internet APN.

I'm not sure how to change this, and I'm also not sure that I can? This seems to be related to the way I'm connecting to the Internet which is by using "dial-up" instead of GPRS...
