Read this if you are trying to report a bug or just comment on a feature.

We welcome your input and would like to hear from you about bugs you have found, things that annoy you and things you would like to see in BlueWhaleMail software in the future.

One of the most important bits of information which we would ask you to provide is the version number of BlueWhaleMail software you are using. This information is available on the Help screen in any version of the software:

It would also be helpful if we knew which mobile phone you are using. This is not always the easiest thing to determine. If you are having trouble, perhaps these posts from our FAQ forum might help you identify it: Select your phone from a picture and I do not see my phone listed.

Other pertinent information might include the name of your operator, country code, etc.

Read this if you are on Vodafone UK and you want to know how much it will cost to use BlueWhaleMail.

Note: Network charges are subject to change and increase and this information is intended only as a guide. Please contact your network operator directly to find out about costs.

Your network operator (e.g. Vodafone) has a mobile network which not only allows old-fashioned voice calls, but also has some newer technologies (sometimes known as "GPRS", "EDGE", or "3G") which allow mobile phones to connect to the internet. BlueWhaleMail software uses this data network to send and receive email on your mobile phone. Use of the data network is usually charged for according to the quantity of data exchanged over the network, often measured in megabytes (MB). BlueWhaleMail software is designed to use as little data as necessary, but it is still a good idea to check your possible charges.

Your network operator will charge you for using their mobile data according to the "data plan" part of the price plan that you have. If you do not have a data plan you can get charged very high prices, so you can save a lot of money by checking that you are on the right data plan. Please read this forum post and then check your data plan with your operator.

Vodafone UK Data Plans

Here is what we have been able to figure out about Vodafone UK's data tariffs:

'Pay monthly' customers

The default data plan available to all customers is £1 per day and it includes an allowance of 15 MB. Every additional MB costs £2.

- "Data Pack" plan - £7.50/month.
- Fair Use: up to 120 MB per month (both sent and received), after which the cost reverts to the default data plan.

This means that unless you add the 'Data Pack' plan, you will be charged the £1/day rate, which is equivalent to about £30/month.

We try to keep our information as up-to-date as possible. If you wish to view the latest information available from Vodafone UK directly please visit:

'Pay as you talk' customers

The default data plan available to all customers is £1 per day and it includes an allowance of 15 MB. Every additional MB costs £2.

Vodafone UK does not offer any data bundles to their 'pay as you talk' customers. This means that most users will be charged the £1/day rate, which is equivalent to about £30/month.

BlueWhaleMail Software Data Usage and Recommendations

The variety of different data plans available and varying usage patterns of individual users often make it hard to offer a single recommendation for all. To minimize your costs please take a moment to consider the plans available. Below we describe three types of users. These are to be taken as rough guesses and usage of other mobile applications such as a web browser, downloading of pictures and ringtones should also be taken into account.

Light user:

If you receive 2-3 emails daily, we estimate that your data usage will not exceed more than 9MB per month. If you are on 'pay as you talk', the best option for you would be to simply use the default data plan at £1/day max. Since Vodafone UK prorates the first 0.5MB per day, you might end up paying a lot less than the daily maximum. If you are on 'pay monthly', the best option for you would be to subscribe to the "Data Pack" bundle for £7.50/month.

Average user:

If you receive 10-15 emails daily, we estimate that your data usage will not exceed more than 15MB per month. If you are on 'pay as you talk', the best option for you would be to simply use the default data plan at £1/day max. Since Vodafone UK prorates the first 0.5MB per day, you might be able to avoid paying the daily maximum on the days when you use data less. If you are on 'pay monthly', the best option for you would be to subscribe to the "Data Pack" bundle for £7.50/month.

Heavy user:

If you receive 50-100 emails daily, we estimate that your data usage will not exceed more than 50MB per month. If you are on 'pay as you talk', the best option for you would be to simply use the default data plan at £1/day max. Alternatively, you might consider switching to 'pay monthly'. If you are on 'pay monthly', the best option for you would be to subscribe to the "Data Pack" bundle for £7.50/month.

Contacting Vodafone UK

To change or inquire about your current data plan, please contact Vodafone UK directly. You can reach Vodafone UK by calling 08700 700191 if you are a 'pay monthly' customer, and 08700 776655 if you are a 'pay as you talk' customer, from any phone. If you prefer to call Customer Services from your Vodafone UK mobile phone, please dial 191.

We also welcome your input so do not hesitate to post your comments, corrections or recommendations and we will update this post appropriately.

Read this if you try to use BlueWhaleMail software on the Vodafone UK network and it reports that there was a problem making a connection to the internet or asks you to check your APN.

When you get a phone from your network operator it should already have all the settings required to use the operators data network. However, sometimes there are problems, or the phone is second hand, or has been bought direct from a retailer without any operator involvement ("SIM-free"). Whatever the reason, we offer some guidance in case you need to enter the settings yourself.

Your network operator (e.g. Vodafone) has a mobile network which not only allows old-fashioned voice calls, but also has some newer technologies (sometimes known as "GPRS", "EDGE", or "3G") which allow mobile phones to connect to the Internet. BlueWhaleMail uses this data network to send and receive email on your mobile phone.

In order for your mobile to be able to use this data network to connect to the Internet, your phone must have some information needed by your network operator. Usually this information is in the form of "APN settings" (APN stands for "Access Point Name").

Different mobile operators have different APN settings. Sometimes the settings are the same for all customers, and at times contract and pay-as-you-go customers have different APN configurations.

Vodafone APN Configuration

To configure your phone automatically you can try using this page:

GPRS APN address: internet
Username: web
Password: web

- other settings can be left blank.

Vodafone UK pay-as-you-go customer:
Name: Vodafone GPRS
GPRS APN address: pp.vodafone.co.uk
Username: wap
Password: wap

- other settings can be left blank.

Different phones have different ways that this information must be entered. For guidelines on how to configure your phone's APN, please visit the following forums:

Read this if you want to know if BlueWhaleMail starts automatically when your phone is turned on.

For most phones which support BlueWhaleMail, BlueWhaleMail should automatically start when you turn on the phone.

You can change this by choosing the Help menu option, then "Stop autostart" to turn this off or "Autostart" to turn it back on again.

Read this if you already have BlueWhaleMail software installed on your phone and want to upgrade it.

Before you try to install a newer version of the BlueWhaleMail software, you need to shut down BlueWhaleMail, if it is running. You can do this by selecting Exit from the Menu in BlueWhaleMail. If you try to upgrade without exiting BlueWhaleMail your phone may fail on installation without any useful message.

During an upgrade you may be asked whether you would like to keep existing data. With each new version we try to make sure that upgrades go as smoothly as possible. We understand that the data you entered in your BlueWhaleMail software is important to you and you do no wish to lose it. Therefore, we recommend you chose to keep your existing data. However, sometimes despite our best efforts your old data will not be compatible with the new version and the installation will fail. In those cases, please try to upgrade again and select No to keeping your data.

    Summary

Many of today's mobile phones are small computers that can connect to the Internet. You can install software like BlueWhaleMail onto them to get your email.

To use BlueWhaleMail on your phone we will help you with five steps:
    1. Download and install the BlueWhaleMail software
    2. Start BlueWhaleMail
    3. Let BlueWhaleMail check that your phone is configured correctly to connect to the Internet
    4. If needed, configure your phone's settings to be able to connect to the Internet
    5. Configure BlueWhaleMail to use your email account

Note: Most of the annoying part (especially steps 3 & 4) is in making sure your phone can connect to the internet. It doesn't really have much to do with BlueWhaleMail itself, but we've tried to provide detailed steps for you. Your network operator will charge you for connecting and transferring data -- it makes sense to see if there are deals you can get ('data tariffs') to make this cheaper.

    1. Download and install the BlueWhaleMail software

We have provided a number of Options to get the BlueWhaleMail software onto your phone. We recommend that you enter your mobile number in Download Option 1 on the left and click the button "Send me a Text Message with the link".

Sometimes the Text Message may be delayed or never get to you and we have provided some help in that case. We have also provided some help if you are having troubles connecting to the Internet when you try to download BlueWhaleMail Software.

Detailed steps: Sony Ericsson Installation W880i

    2. Start BlueWhaleMail

Once the BlueWhaleMail software is installed, your phone will ask you to run the BlueWhaleMail software.

If you want to start the BlueWhaleMail software later, you can do that from the folder you downloaded it to. The default folder is:

    Menu -> Organizer -> Applications -> BlueWhaleMail.

    Detailed steps: Starting BlueWhaleMail W880i

    3. Let BlueWhaleMail check that your phone is configured correctly to connect to the Internet

When first started, BlueWhaleMail checks to make sure your phone has the right settings to allow BlueWhaleMail to connect to the Internet.

Detailed steps: Starting BlueWhaleMail and making sure it can connect to the Internet

    4. If needed, configure your phone's settings to connect to the Internet

If BlueWhaleMail reports problems connecting to the Internet in the previous step, there are a couple of extra settings you might need to change on your phone.

These are settings that allow software on your phone like BlueWhaleMail to connect to the Internet and are usually called APN settings (for Access Point Name).

If BlueWhaleMail reports a connection problem, we have provided some help in the link below. Once you have followed the instructions, try going back to step 2 and running BlueWhaleMail again.

Detailed steps: SonyEricsson Connection Settings W880i

    5. Configure BlueWhaleMail to use your email account

BlueWhaleMail needs to know where to get your email from. It can usually figure out this information based on your email address (e.g. for bob.smith@gmail.com we know to try to get it from Google's Gmail site).

BlueWhaleMail will ask you for your email address and password. This is your usual password used to access your email -- you are not creating a new password. We will not save your password anywhere but on your phone.

Once BlueWhaleMail has figured out the right information it will make a suggestion. If BlueWhaleMail cannot make a good suggestion based on your email address (e.g. if you have an unusual one like tom.smith@yourownsmallbusiness.com) it will ask you to enter settings for other email accounts manually. If you do not know what settings to enter, you can check What settings should I use for my email account? forum.

Once you accept BlueWhaleMail's suggestion or manually enter your own information, BlueWhaleMail will automatically start receiving email. It might take few seconds once it first starts the download.

Enabling POP access for Yahoo Mail

To access your Yahoo mail from BlueWhaleMail software, you need POP access enabled in your Yahoo account.

In some countries Yahoo Mail accounts include POP access for free, e.g. "yahoo.co.uk" accounts.

Unfortunately, in other countries, POP access is not available with the regular Yahoo Mail accounts (e.g. "yahoo.com", "yahoo.ca") and you have to upgrade to premium Yahoo! Mail Plus service. For more information about enabling POP access on Yahoo or determining the type of your account, please visit How do I POP my mail? If you want to upgrade your account to Yahoo! Mail Plus, please visit this page.

Setting up Yahoo Mail in BlueWhaleMail

Once you have enabled POP access in your account, you will be able to send and receive mail using BlueWhaleMail software. Start the BlueWhaleMail software and enter your yahoo email address and password. Click "Continue". The next page will contain all the required information and you do not have to change anything. Click "Continue" and you should be done!
